eReader Giveaways!

I'm pretty sure there are lots of people out there who would like a Kindle, Nook, or other ereader, and I'm pretty sure they would prefer to win one over paying for one. Who wouldn't, right? Here are some that I have found; feel free to email me if you have found others so I can include them in future posts. And who knows, you may find a new blog to follow!

A quick note on these giveaways - I have no knowledge, and am not affiliated with, any of the websites or people who are conducting the giveaways. I am simply looking across the internet and supplying the links to them for you. It is your responsibility to check out these websites and make sure they are legitimate. I will obviously try not to include any that seem fishy to me. And please let us know if you happen to win one!

Hype! The Hunger Games

1. The Hunger Games

Deserving of the hype? Yes!
Rating for the trilogy: 4/5 stars
Current Goodreads stats: The Hunger Games (Book 1)
     - 4.53/5 stars, 643,592 ratings, 81,836 reviews

Please see my previous post about Hype!

I'm starting with these books since they are my most recent example (and for this post I am referring to the trilogy as a whole). I first heard about these books in 2010. Someone I follow on Goodreads had given The Hunger Games a glowing review so I looked into it. To be honest, the premise of the book held absolutely no appeal to me. From what I could gather, it was about a bunch of kids sent to an arena to fight it out to the death. This didn't strike me as interesting, so I let it pass me by. Despite constantly hearing about these books and how good they were, I never revisited them.

Then, the movie came out. It was our anniversary, and this movie was playing at the right time so we got our popcorn and soda and headed in...and it was amazing! We both really loved the movie so it was only a matter of time before we picked up the book. About a week later I purchased The Hunger Games, and read it within a few days. I immediately read the following two novels, and my husband is currently working his way through the final book.

There is so much more going on in these books than the simple description I first encountered. There are a lot of interesting issues about war that are raised, and they do a good job of portraying the idea that no one really wins in war. These books kept me up at night saying 'I'll read just one more chapter', and I would inevitably read two or more. They do have a few flaws, mostly apparent in the final book, but the trilogy as a whole is terrific.

Overall, I am so glad we saw the movie, because the books have become some of my favorites.

Do you follow the Hype?

It begins simply: a new book is released, possibly from a little known author or maybe a well known one.

Then, it starts climbing the best seller charts. All of a sudden it's everywhere; you overhear someone in the bookstore mention it, book clubs start reading it, blogs start talking about it, and magazines have articles about it. The hype has set in...you hear things like "This is a book you need to read...NOW!" and "Have you read ______? Really? Wow, you're missing out!"

I'm not sure why I am always so late to jump on the hype-train, but for whatever reason I am. Perhaps it's because of the constant exposure, so I'm tired of the book before I even pick it up. Which really isn't fair to the book; I mean, it's popular for a reason, right? And I have noticed for many of these books, I pick them up after seeing the movie. Whatever that might mean.

Once I finally give in to the hype, I usually find myself saying something like 'I should have read this sooner" or "Yep, everyone was right, this book is great." Occasionally I have been let down as well, but I don't think this has happened quite as often. In the coming weeks I will share with you my experiences with hyped-up books, from The Hunger Games to Harry Potter and many in between.

Do you pick up a book if everyone is talking about it? Or do you find yourself holding back? Why or why not? Maybe you're answers will help me figure it out for myself!

eReader Giveaways!

A few months ago I decided I might like to try out an ereader. I wasn't sure I would like it, as I have always loved paperback books. What really caught my eye about them was the fact that so many classic books are available for free on them. I tried reading these on my iPod Touch, but I really didn't like it (too small and I didn't like the backlit screen). So I decided to search the internet to see if I could save some money and win one. I was not so lucky, but I did end up getting a Kindle Keyboard for my birthday (and I love it!).

Book Nook

So, where do you enjoy reading the most? Indoors or outdoors? The comfy chair, the couch, or the bed? I've never had a specific place in my house for reading (although I wish I did). Unfortunately I don't have much time for reading during the day, so it is usually in bed before going to sleep. But occasionally I have curled up on the couch with a cozy blanket and nice cup of hot tea or hot chocolate. I have also been known to read while taking a bath...so relaxing!

Now lets say for a moment that I were to win the lottery. One of the first things I would do (after quitting my job of course) would be to build my dream home. One of the essential features to this home would be a library. And in that library would be that special space for reading. I've thought a nice comfy chair with good lighting and a table to put my drink within in arms reach would be just the ticket. Then Pinterest came along, and what I have seen there has completely blown my ideal reading spot right out the window. So, I decided every so often I would share some of the incredible reading spots I have found there, as well as other places on the web.

What would be your ideal reading area? And what do you think of this one? I'm picturing a window with a view instead of the back wall...

I'm going for it...

I'm going to start a blog! (I realize this is nothing new these days, but it is for me as this is my first blog). I have an immense love of reading and I want to share it with others. I truly hope this blog can become an interactive space to share my joys with reading, and I invite you to come along. This isn't just another review blog, there are lots of those out there in the blogosphere and I don't think I really have anything to add on that front. I may at times write my thoughts on the books I'm reading, or have read in the past, but I don't anticipate those posts to be in a true 'review' type format. The intentions of this blog are more general, and pretty much anything related to books and reading can be found here.

So, what exactly can you expect to encounter with this blog? I hope to have regular posts listing giveaways I have been able to find through my internet wanderings. I'd like to put them in a nice easy to reach place so others can find them as well. I hope to include Top 10 lists - these can range from what I think are the top 10's for a particular topic or other lists I have found and want to share. Anything I have found on the internet that has been helpful to me as a lover of books, I'd like to highlight here and share with my fellow bookworms. These could be blogs, articles, or other websites. And of course, as long as it's related to books in some way, I'll be posting my thoughts on anything and everything that pops into my head. These are just a few of the ideas I have bouncing around in my brain, but there are lots more! And I truly want others to participate. I hope everyone will leave comments on posts and add their thoughts to any of the topics I bring up.

So, that's Brie's Book Blog in a nutshell. I'm excited to see where this takes me and what direction this blog will take. I hope you'll join me!
